Getting to know your past can help you in the present.
The DAW formula and how it works.
Everyone has a natural curiosity about their ancestors. Genealogy is a way to research your past and in doing so you might learn a little bit about yourself and those closest to you. Did you ever wonder why you look the way you do? Or what side of you're family do you take after? Who will your children look like?
Dorothy Anne Walter came up with this formula after decades of genealogy research.
It's very simple:
First daughters take after their father.
First sons take after the mother.
Second daughters are an even split with mother and father.
Second sons are also and even split with mother and father.
The only time it changes:
If the mother suffers a miscarriage.
Whether it be a boy or girl. The next child would technically be the second child. So if she miscarried a boy, and her next child was a boy. He would be her second son. Therefore he would be an even split of both mother and father.
If she miscarried a girl, Then the next girl she had would be her second daughter and so on.
The other exception is a change in partners. With a new partner the formula starts all over again.

Researching your family
When you are researching your genealogy. Some of the best sources of information can come from people still living in your family, a grandmother, grandfather, great-aunt, great-uncle just to name a few. Anyone with knowledge of your family history could be helpful to you in your research. Approach it like you wouldn't interview, take notes, record them. Sometimes you get overwhelmed with information. Being able to refer back to recordings and notes helps immensely.

I have always had an interest in genealogy.
My love for genealogy stems from my mom she was the matriarch of the family and had a passion for genealogy. In her early 20s she started researching the family lineage; information was a lot harder to come by. Throughout my childhood I would hear stories about different family members and the part they played in history. I became very interested at a young age, I was fascinated to find out who we were related to.
I started helping my mom with the research in the early 1980s. We would spend many hours going over microfilm {also known as microfiche because you were fishing for information} painstakingly taking notes by hand. Things have come along way since then, thank goodness for the Internet.
